GENERAL HENRY H. ARNOLD
EDUCATION GRANT PROGRAM
Scholarship Information
Since its inception in 1942, the Air Force
Aid Society (AFAS) has been committed to helping Air Force members and
their families realize their academic
goals. In recent years, the Society's emphasis has been on direct funding
of new
initiatives that provide greater value
to Air Force families.
The centerpiece of the Society's education
initiatives is the General Henry H. Arnold Education Grant Program which
provides $1500 grants to selected sons
and daughters of active duty, retired and deceased Air Force members;
spouses (stateside) of active duty members
and surviving spouses of deceased personnel for their undergraduate
studies. The value and success of this
program is demonstrated in the 49,128 grants disbursed since the first
awards
were made for the 1988 - 1989 academic
year.
This grant program remains competitive
in its need-based selection criteria, uniquely tailored to recognize the
proper
weighing of family income and education
cost factors, and is administered by ACT Recognition Program Services.
ACT, located in Iowa City IA, is an independent,
not-for-profit organization with over 30 years experience in providing
support services to scholarship sponsors.
Awards for the 2000-2001 academic year
will be announced in June 2000. Use of funds is limited to tuition, books
and
fees, or other direct educational expenses.

Fund-
501(c)(3) 1012 14th St. N.W., Suite 201 Washington, D.C., 20005 (202) 393-0090 The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund (VVMF)
announced today that it has authorized funds for scholarships in the amount
of $100,000 for children of Vietnam Era Veterans attending colleges throughout
the United States, and overseas (if on active duty with the U. S. Military).
VVMF will give the scholarships directly to colleges for distribution and
selection of students. VVMF selected various colleges to help deserving
students nationwide. Some colleges such as Texas Tech and the University
of California have Vietnam study programs. A Scholarship endowment was
created at the University of Maryland Extension College so that military
personnel or their dependents who are children of Vietnam veterans can
take college courses. The University of Maryland has branches on military
bases allowing personnel to receive college credit. Other colleges were
selected based upon enrollment and service to a particular region of the
U.S. Some schools, such as Norwich University (America's oldest private
military college), were selected because their focus on military leadership
seemed a reasonable method to find children of Vietnam veterans. VVMF will
also encourage veterans groups to contribute funds in order to bring more
resources for the scholarship program to participating colleges. Each college
will receive a $5,000 grant with the exception of the University of

The Red River Valley
Fighter Pilots Association's (RRVA) Scholarship Program was initiated in
1970 with the objective of "taking care of our own." Initially the scholarships
were made available strictly to dependent sons and daughters of KIA/MIA/POW
US aircrews lost while serving in Southeast Asia. Over the years, the eligibility
criteria has been expanded to include the immediate dependents, including
spouse, of any member of the US Armed Forces who is listed in KIA or MIA
status from any combat situation involving our military from Southeast
Asia (August 1964) through the present time. In addition, immediate dependents
of military aircrew members killed while performing aircrew duties on a
non-combat mission and those of deceased River Rats who were in good standing
at the time of their death are now eligible for scholarship assistance.
The scholarships are
awarded annually by the Scholarship Committee. New applicants are required
to request the necessary forms no later than February 1st of each year.
The time frame for consideration is critical. The completed applications
must be received by the National Office no later than March 15th. Final
selections and award levels are determined during the Association's Annual
Reunion during April or May. All decisions are final. During the summer,
each recipient must confirm his/her status for the coming academic year.
Funds are sent directly to the institution of learning to be used for tuition,
books and other academic expenditures as may be required, to include room
and board.
The River Rat Scholarship
Program has had to pass very stringent qualifications to be selected and
supported by the Independent Charities of America (ICA) listed in the Combined
Federal Campaign (CFC). As a result, the program is now a model for many
other programs around the country. However, much of the program's funding
derives from River Rat sponsored activities and private donations. The
RRVA is an IRS 501(C)(3) tax exempt organization and is eligible for Combined
Federal Campaign contributions as well as charitable donations from private
individuals and organizations.
Since the inception
of the Scholarship Program, the River Rats are proud to have awarded over
700 scholarship grants at a value of over $1,100,000.
If you'd like to make
a donation to the Rat's Scholarship Program, or are qualified and would
like an application, contact the address above.
