This site is dedicated to my father

Sgt. Don A. Hawkins

U.S. Army, 5th Special Forces Group

November 1, 1944 - November 1, 1967

Dad grew up in San Diego, California. He graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School, Class of 1961. Dad enjoyed Roller Skating and won many awards.

In 1965 Dad joined the U.S. Army. He went through basic training at Ft. Polk, Louisiana. He then went on to Special Forces Training School at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina. He was trained as a Radio Operator. He requested and received his orders for service in Vietnam the summer of 1967.
On August 24, 1967 dad married my mom, Brenda Sue Jones. My mom was very young when they were married (only 16). I once asked my grandfather before he passed away why on earth he allowed mom to get married at her age. He only said "You didn't know your dad."

Dad arrived in Vietnam on September 23, 1967. He spent a few weeks in Da Nang attending the MACV Recon School. He was then assigned to CCN, FOB 1 at Phu Bai.
