My dad is SP4 Joel D. Coleman. He was born on March
31, 1945 to Joseph and Dorothy Coleman of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
He was the oldest of five children. He graduated from Bishop Canevin High School in 1963. Dad enlisted in the Army in January, 1965. He and my mom, Susan then got married on June 12,1965.
I was
born on October 6th of that same year.
At that time he was stationed at Fort Gordon, Georgia.
In November 1965 he received his orders for Vietnam. He was assigned
to Alpha Company, Second Battalion, Seventh
Cavalry Regiment, First Cavalry Division (Airmobile). Dad was
able to spend the next month with my mom and I. On December 22, 1965
he left for Vietnam.
After a day of searching villages and total exhaustion setting in, Alpha Company dug in for the night with a green rice paddy in front of them bordered with a thin wood line. Unexpectedly, from the tree line there was approximately thirty rounds of machine gun fire. At the age of 21 my dad was killed by hostile ground fire in the Province of Bong Son, Vietnam. I was able to meet my dad's XO Larry Gwin on Veterans' Day 1997. His book "Baptism A Vietnam Memoir" helped me learn the details about my dads tour and also what happened the day he died. I realized that in spite of all the terrible times he had to face there, he also had some good times too. I feel very fortunate for meeting Larry and the other men who served in Alpha Company. Operation
Davy Crockett
My dads name is engraved on the East Wall -panel 7-line 29 along with many
other members of the First Cav 2/7th. The majority of the men my
dad served with were killed the very next day at the battle of Bong Son
II. For his bravery, in addition to receiving the Purple Heart, my
dad was also awarded the Bronze Star.
